BOTANY FOR BEGINNERS
Botany for Beginners is a multi-class workshop which takes place over 3 months. The program is tailored to elementary aged students at schools and co-ops. It covers seeds, germination, understanding the difference between a fruit and a vegetable, how to grow small edible foods.
Once a child sees it grow, they will naturally become curious and willing to try the foods they grow. We teach them about germination, seeds, soil, how to take care of plants, how plants grow, why it's important to our ecosystem for plants to grow and more. This exposure could lead them to be more self sufficient and make better food choices for a more healthy lifestyle. We want to make botany fun for beginners.
Depending on the season, children will have a chance to grow 5-10 different items with our help and guidance. These plants include, but are not limited to; lettuce, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, peas, sunflowers, radish, beets, strawberry starters, and various flowers for pollination. This class normally lasts for three to five sessions over a three month period. We spread this process out so the children get the responsibility of nurturing and taking care of the plants over
In the last class we cover harvesting and use the plants they've grown to taste the fruits of their labor. We also cover bed maintenance so they can prepare their growing medium for future use.
